Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster has explored the sensory and cognitive relationships between bodies and spaces, both real and fictitious. Incorporating references from literature—such as the works of Virginia Woolf, Thomas Pynchon, and Philip K. Dick—as well as film, architecture, music, and science, she creates environments categorized as "chambres," "interiors," "gardens," and "planets." These spatial investigations question the implicit neutrality of exhibition spaces and aim to alter the memory and imagination of the viewers.
The artist is the recipient of the Marcel Duchamp Award (2002) and the Mies Van der Rohe Award (1996). She participated in the Venice Biennale in 1990, 1993, 1999, 2003, 2009, and 2019, and was included in Documenta11 (2002). In 2008, she realized the installation TH.2058 as part of The Unilever Series in the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern. Her practice also extends to moving image media; in 2022, Christophe... définitivement, a film she co-directed with Ange Leccia, was selected for the Official Selection of the 75th Festival de Cannes.
Her work has been exhibited at major international institutions, including Centre Pompidou, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, MoMA, and Tate Modern. Recent solo exhibitions include presentations at Pinacoteca de São Paulo (2025), Bourse de Commerce – Pinault Collection (2022), and Serpentine Galleries (2022). In Asia, her work has been featured in exhibitions at Arario Museum (2016) and M+ (2022). Her pieces are represented in the permanent collections of 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Dia Art Foundation, and Sammlung Goetz, among others.
