Yonsok Yi is an artist based in Seoul. His practice revisits and diverges from painting to construct a terrain of deliberate instability, often intersecting with other media such as cinema, craft, and music. Yi’s canvas constellations appear highly manipulated, cryptic, and at times knowingly deceptive—elaborating on beliefs once held through ceremonies and jaded symbols.

*두훙 키타키 구훙 타다다 두훙 키타키 쿵 타* "So, the teachers and the students were all desperate to teach and learn." 가서 동무들한테 배워져야 하니까.", "We had to deliver it. And teach our comrades."

At the end of a long, narrow wall, Hwayeon Nam’s video work, “Against Waves" is screened. The first half features an elderly female dancer performing a solo in an auditorium. The shots are composed from a first-person perspective; the camera retreats as the dancer approaches and follows as she moves away, breathing in sync with her. In the subsequent shot, the camera rotates in a larger orbit around her body as she continues a spinning motion. Both methods immerse the viewer into the perspective of someone learning the dance.

Compared to the latter half featuring students, this opening is sparser, higher in resolution, and carries a different kind of tension. As one follows the sound of her chanting the beat, the gaze lingers on the muscles of her face and neck, while the distinct friction of white beoseon (traditional socks) stepping on the gymnasium's basketball court pulls the gaze down to her toes. This divided gaze—moving up and down—makes the dancer's body appear even lighter and sharper, as if she were walking a tightrope.

The dancer is Kyunghee Lee, a Zainichi Korean dance teacher and a transmitter of Chosun dance. In the latter half, Lee is seen teaching a group of young girls. Amidst the hollow yet loud resonance characteristic of auditorium speakers, the outlines of black dance uniforms shimmer like scales or armor within the low-resolution footage. Despite the seemingly heavier uniforms, the students smile consistently, and even those smiles appear to be part of the dance and the instruction.

Nam’s "Against Waves" tracks how the dance of Choi Seung-hee—colonial Korea’s first modern female dancer who was referred to by various names due to her defection to North Korea—has been transmitted and transformed. By illuminating the process of how dance was passed down to Zainichi Korean society through the "Basic Chosun National Dance," Nam reveals a genealogy of bodies where Choi Seung-hee, Kyunghee Lee, and the students intermingle.

On the opposite wall, two new works are placed together. One features the goreum (ribbons) of male and female hanbok tied together with thread, revealing a stiff texture with a subtle luster. The other is an anonymous archival photograph from 1949 related to "Against Waves" in which the subject’s face has been cut out. This removal of the face alludes to the historical situation where Choi Seung-hee was rendered anonymous, referred to only as "Choi Mo" (Certain Choi), because her work was created after she moved to the North.

Immediately after Kyunghee Lee chants the beat, subtitles appear over the muted screen:
"Duhung kitaki guhung tadada duhung kitaki kung ta." "So, the teachers and the students were all desperate to teach and learn." Here, subtle linguistic play and liberal translation intervene: "Those who teach and those who have entered the ship (learned) were desperate." In the next subtitle—"Because we had to deliver it. Because we had to go and be learned by our comrades" and "We had to deliver it. And teach our comrades"—the direction of learning is translated simultaneously and bidirectionally without distinction. This moment offers a glimpse into Nam’s attitude toward the flow of transmission itself, crossing ideologies, borders, and historical ruptures.

Mira M. Yang’s "Cinematheque Moranbang" begins with the photo archive of Chris Marker, a French writer, photographer, and filmmaker. In 1958, Marker visited North Korea at the invitation of the North Korean government as part of a delegation of French journalists, artists, and intellectuals. This journey was part of a cultural and diplomatic exchange to introduce the reconstruction of North Korea as a socialist state after the Korean War. Based on this experience, he published the photo book Coréennes the following year. "Coréennes" is the feminine French noun for “Koreans."

Yang focuses on the performance scenes of dancer Choi Seung-hee and her daughter, An Sung-hee, featured in this book. Choi, the first from colonial Korea to reach American and European stages, established a unique movement language by combining Western modern dance with Korean folk and shamanic elements. After moving to the North, she focused on dance education and collective choreography, creating a new dance system.

Yang re-photographed these original slides from the Cinémathèque Française using a macro lens. In this process, the scale marks on the edges of the photos curve concavely, and the figures appear blurred. While the texture of the images resembles an 18th-century magic lantern, the installation in the gallery feels colder. The re-photographed images are projected overlapping through two Kodak projectors. The mechanical sound of the projector switching slides is heard, and for a few seconds, the dissolved screen slowly permeates over the previous image. Just as the distortion acts as a device that actively reveals the act of re-photography, the sound of the slides changing and the misalignment and delay in viewing the next image function as important material units in the work.

Dissolving is a technique that immediately evokes faint movement between two static images, and like the distortion, it is fundamentally illusory. The gap between memory and record, and their inseparable state, is akin to the bodies of the mother and daughter, Choi Seung-hee and An Sung-hee. The overlapping of Chris Marker and Yang reveals the performative nature of archival research, which constantly transforms as different political contexts are reconnected.

In Jae Pil Eun’s work, the body is something less changeable and more solid than clothes or moods; thus, there is a sense of isolation and sadness that the body endures. Simultaneously, there is the fleeting joy and shame that clothes and moods bestow upon the body. Within the grammar of performance, these emotions are understood as public expressions the more intimately they are felt by others. Eun’s performance, "Blue Night, Blue Shadow," shares this structure.

This performance focuses on hand movements, presenting a style of Peking Opera that portrays feminine gestures. Minute gestures—lifting a sleeve, cradling a light basket, or grasping a flower stem in mid-air—become the core of Eun’s performance. Since a woman’s gestures are a part of the body that concentrates the objectified female image, it requires physical training from male actors to twist and contract their fingers and the backs of their hands to make them appear thinner and smaller from the audience's perspective.

The "public intimacy" in Eun’s work is the desire to become a woman through a male body. At the center of this peripheral history is Mei Lanfang, a Peking Opera actor who played female roles. Just as the research into Mei Lanfang evokes an emotional state like a sanctuary or a deserted island for Eun, it is inherently inseparable from a commentary on Western-centric society, which has long demarcated the boundaries between male and female, tradition and modernity.

After discovering that a plan to publish a translation of Mei Lanfang’s acting manual (published in 1935) was never realized, Eun has been collaborating since 2020 with contemporary cross-dressing actors in China and the Netherlands to translate, research, and perform this manual themselves. Eun reconfigures the performance "Blue Night, Blue Shadow" into a solo play, "translating" Mei Lanfang’s manual through the body. For this, an L-shaped runway was constructed, and the performance takes place twice—at the beginning and the end of the exhibition period—under the bright theater spotlights on a silver chair.

"Hand Gestures and Portrait of Mei Lanfang" is a work derived from the same research, featuring images of photos from Mei Lanfang’s manual reproduced on copper plates and printed on paper, displayed alongside the original copper plates. Arranged in a way that evokes a museum archive, they reveal the material process of recording and reproduction—solid things that change less than the body itself.
