Soon after her return from Paris in 1989, Hanayo began training as a geisha apprentice in Mukojima. She retired from the geisha world in 1995 and moved to the UK in the same year. Currently based in Berlin and Tokyo, she has made works throughout her career as a photographer, geisha, musician, and model. Her photographs and collages capture her daily life in a dreamlike light that colors her surroundings. She also exhibits installations in which music and three-dimensional elements are added to her collages and photographs.
Her major exhibitions include PARCO GALLERY (Tokyo, 2000), Palais de Tokyo (Paris, 2002), and Taka Ishii Gallery Photography / Film (Tokyo, 2017). Her publications include Hanayome (Shinchosha, 1996), MAGMA (AKAAKA Art Publishing, 2008), berlin (Getsuyosha, 2013), Tenko (Case Publishing, 2016), and Hanayo’s Underworld: Half a Century (KawadeShoboShinsha, 2021). Her music albums include wooden veil (dekorder, 2009) and Gift (DHR Geist, 2000). Her works are included in the collection of Tokyo Photographic Art Museum (Tokyo).
하나요가 파리에서 돌아온 직후인 1989년, 작가는 무코지마에서게이샤 수습 과정을 시작했습니다. 1995년 게이샤 활동을 마치고 같은 해 영국으로 이주했습니다. 현재는 베를린과 도쿄를 기반으로 활동하며 사진작가, 게이샤, 뮤지션, 모델 등 다양한 분야에서 작품 활동을 이어오고 있습니다. 그의 사진과 콜라주 작품은 주변을 물들이는 몽환적인 빛으로 자신의 일상을 포착해 냅니다. 또한 콜라주와 사진에 음악과 입체적 요소를 더한 설치를 선보이기도 합니다.
주요 전시로는 PARCO GALLERY(도쿄, 2000), Palais de Tokyo(파리, 2002), Taka Ishii Gallery Photography / Film(도쿄, 2017) 등이 있습니다. 저서 및 사진집으로는 『Hanayome』(Shinchosha, 1996), 『MAGMA』(AKAAKA Art Publishing, 2008), 『berlin』(Getsuyosha, 2013), 『Tenko』(Case Publishing, 2016), 『Hanayo’s Underworld: Half a Century』(KawadeShoboShinsha, 2021) 등이 있으며, 음악 앨범으로는 『wooden veil』(dekorder, 2009), 『Gift』(DHR Geist, 2000)를 발매했습니다. 그의 작품은 Tokyo Photographic Art Museum(도쿄)에 소장되어 있습니다.
